What's Done....not what are you Doing

Dragging on and on with uncompleted projects is a managers pain in the neck.  It blocks the flow of work and can stagnate initiatives.  But a "knock it out and get it done" style is a "finishing" type of attitude that gets work in and out the door!

Teri Daley, one of my Samsung coaching clients, tells her team, "Tell me what you've DONE, not what you are DOING!"  She has to depend on her staff to take initiatives, make a plan and knock it out!  There isn't anything wrong with a progress report....UNLESS it becomes a scape goat for not finishing up something that has been on the board for a while!

  1. Set an initiative
  2. Make a plan
  3. Set a Start / Finish date
  4. KNOCK it out!

YES!  It's that simple!  "Tell me what you've DONE....not what you are DOING!"

Oh....by the way: How are you doing with those first 100 days of goal setting for 2013?  Are all 9 categories written?  Contact me if you want some coaching on that!

Which Hat Makes You The Most Money

You wear a lot of hats, don't you!  Some of those hats are a lot of fun!  You really enjoy putting it in place and sporting it around!  It's your image and makes your feel good!

There are some hats you probably wish you could throw into the trash!  And others that you would gladly share with someone else!  As a matter of fact you have tried many times to get rid of one of those hats, but the rest of the staff keeps bringing it back and putting it square on your pretty little head!

The BIG THREE of Priority Management

HAVE YOU NOTICED…..IT’S AN ANIMAL?

Priority management is NOT a black and white science!  It’s not just calendars, task lists and deadlines that can be filled in and color coded…and then executed with perfection!

It’s an animal!  It has a mind of its own: the mind of everyone else connected to your schedule and routine!  Time doesn’t always consult you before it makes a bolt in a new direction or throws a screaming emergency across your path!  Neither does it listen to reason; it has its own agenda and priorities!

Sticky Note Goal Challenge

Back on December 29, 2011.. I sent out this tweet: Time Management tip: Send me 10 goals for you first 100 days of 2012. Wow you are already 97% ahead of your competition.

@DannyLSmith took me up on my challenge. He is making some significant transitions in the next 100 days...so he took me serious. Over the next 5 days he posted 1 or 2 tweets a day with some of his professional goals. Here is what they look like.

1. Give 75 good referrals

2. Finish 100 days with a $3,000,000 open pipeline

3. Receive 38 good referral loans

4. 8 Trust Workshops

5. 12 new recommendations on LinkedIn

6. New FB BizPage w/5 referrals to Realtors

7. 100% On-Time Closings

8. 100 one 2 one meetings

9. $5,000,000 Fundings

10. Make a Difference / Make a profit

Pretty impressive huh!

OK... I'm sure we have some "Goal Guru's" who might be looking over those 10 line items and have some smart comments about them.... but as his friend and pro-bono coach...I'm telling any critics to SHUT UP! Unless you have 10 or more... he is already ahead of you! Actually.. Danny is ahead of 97% of us all...simply because he wrote those down. Way to go man!

Do you have trouble getting in that groove of writing down your goals. Are you hitting brick walls? Does it seem just too formal or confusing?

Try this:

1. Gather in your family or department leaders
2. Get a stack of "sticky notes". A different color for each person
3. Start thinking about ALL the things you would like to see happen in 2012.
4. Remove all budget barriers - forget about the cost
- Remove all personnel barriers
- Remove all logistic barriers
- Remove all personal limitation barriers
- Remove all resource barriers
- Remove all calendar or time barriers

5. Set a 5 minute timer
6. Start writing one goal per page on a sticky note
7. Move quickly
- As soon as a thought comes to your mind....write it down
- Don't worry about it being too rediculous, simple or complicated

After your 5 minute timer goes off... as a group... discuss all your goals and brainstorm action plans. You're going to be amazed at what you discover! VIP: When you get done... POST them where you and others can see them!
I've done this several times on retreats. It's amazing what starts bubbling out of you once you get in that mode and you are limited by time! Let it flow!

Breaking YOU through personal and professional barriers

100 Days of Renovation

Change. Renovation. Re-Brand.  It's all about change!

Make a list of the top 3-5 changes that would have the biggest impact on your life.
  1. Weight
  2. Professional or Personal Relationships
  3. Debt / Income
  4. Professional Skill
  5. Lead Generation

Now list some specific benefits you would get from that change.
  1. Feel better about yourself
  2. Get on the inside track and repair some brokenness
  3. Freedom from anxiety
  4. Outpace your competition
  5. New clients = $$$

Now let's talk about your time commitment to that change.
First Week (7 days).  You're just on a mental diet...with no real intention to change your ways.

First Month.  You really gritted your teeth and toughed your way through it on your own.  Good work.   But the finish line just signals you are likely to go back to your old ways.

Second Month.  WOW... you are actually developing some stamina.  Stamina is a mindset and a result of staying with something for a while.  It only comes AFTER you have been doing something for a while.  Good boy!  Good girl!

Third Month. Something deep has changed.  Some old, bad habits are on the verge of losing their power over your life.  Resolve, consistency and accountability have gained serious momentum.  People are looking at you in a completely different way.

100 Days.  The New YOU is set and cured.  You are turning heads.  Business is better.  Relationships are moving in the right direction.

One of David's decisions was to change the way he dressed.  He shopped a sale at a men's clothing store and picked up some new professional dress clothes.  No more jeans.  No more sloppy slacks.  Now he is always in professional wear.  Suits. Sport coats.  Nice pants and shirts.  It is interesting how promotions and accomplishments followed him over the next few months.

Make a list of the top 3-5 changes that would have the biggest impact on your life.  Find a buddy, a support group, a mentor or a coach.  Now make a 100 day commitment to that change.

This video will help you with your time blocking.  http://youtu.be/Dw4vU7xoZNU

Call in April...and let's see the new YOU!

Coach

Want BIG Changes in 2012

Everyone wants big changes in 2012!

If change was easy, personal trainers and coaches would be out of business.  Nobody would be overweight, bad at tennis or golf and we would all have great work habits.  But we all know that talking about change is the easiest part...and we do a lot of that!

86% of all big change has one of these:

Buddy.  The buddy system has been around a long time!  It's informal and you're not having to pay them directly (you just have to pay your gym membership fee that the two of you talked each other into).  Getting a buddy to work out with, learn a new language, take a class or whatever is a simple cure to keep you in the game.

Group Study. Ok...so you don't have a buddy.  Or at least one who will pay her half of the gym fee.  Now look for a group study.  There are plenty of those around.  And the fact that you found a few people who want the same thing you do will make it easy to keep each other on track.  You might be surprised at what you will find out in a group study and much synergy can rise!

Mentor.  This is a little more serious.  It usually means you are making a bigger commitment to a section of your life.  It means you are going to give someone permission to speak to your values and long term success.  Mentors usually happen in a work environment.  It may be formal or not.  I could be up close and personal.  Or it could be at a distance.  But it's someone who you requested to help you make some changes.

Professional Coach.  You hired this one.  You are spending money.  You gave him permission to put you on a schedule and hold you to it.  He is going to install some things into your thinking and lifestyle.  Change will go from excitement to nervousness to irritation to frustration back to excitement and celebration.  You will watch yourself do things you NEVER thought possible (when you are honest with yourself).  You will set goals and actions plans!  You will start talking in a new way.  You will abandon bad habits and methodically start new ones!

And in 100 days... you will Celebrate BIG CHANGE!!

And I'm gonna be celebrating with you!!!

Maybe you should consider Group Coaching!   Check out my video.  http://youtu.be/5yZbFYg60CI

Coaching the Elect of God

Looking back over the year I was reminded of a very special and specific group of clients I've been blessed to help; Senior Pastors, Worship Leaders and their staff.

Regardless of the occupation (calling), going from good to great usually involves either a coach or a mentor.  Hey... just getting your head above water so you can BREATHE takes someone besides yourself!!!

But honestly...these are some of the best people I know and it was a joy work with them.

Todd Hull - Singles Pastor - Lakewood Church in Houston
Robin Steele - Senior Pastor - Promiseland San Marcos (broke ground for his 2nd building last week)
Tim Smith - Senior Pastor - C3 in Torrance, CA
Brent Rashall - Senior Pastor - Dyersburg, TN
Jacob Lowery - Musician Songwriter Extraordinaire - Nashville, TN
Jimmy Fedorkevich - Worship Pastor - Promiseland West, Austin
Derrick Zwerneman - Event Coordinator - Celebration Church, Georgetown

And here is the truth:  Everyone of these men are blazing forward in their calling, gifts and vision.  They are possessing new land, breaking records (cutting some records too) and producing outstanding ministry!  The world here and the world to come is going to be a much better place because of their contribution.

What did coaching do for these guys?  Call them and ask.  But here is what I was committed to:
  • Creating new time management habits
  • 10 Keys to Time Management
  • Defined their priorities, vision and support team
  • SMART Goals - for the year and the month
  • Time blocking to keep them focused
  • Arresting time thieves
  • Accountability - having to answer to their coach.
The Elect of God are called to use their gifts with diligence.  Sometimes that can be very frustrating.  But there is hope and help....when the student is ready, the teacher will appear!

So...I'm looking forward to see who else God is going to put into my classroom in 2012.  It may be YOU!

Favor, blessing, power and strength be upon you!
